NPPAOU Newsletter: October 1, 2022
The Ohio News Photographers Association and special guests visit this week!
Happy October, NPPAOU folks!
It was wonderful seeing everyone and talking about the quickly approaching internship season at our last meeting.
To look back at everything we talked about on Tuesday, and more, be sure to check out the NPPAOU Internship Guide Google Drive folder found on our website at nppaou.org/resources.
This upcoming week, Gaelan Morse and Barbara Perenic from the Ohio News Photographers Association (ONPA) are visiting us on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 6:30 p.m. in RTV 462/464.
For a special portfolio review night, Maddie McGarvey, Joshua Bickel, Ty Wright, Dustin Franz, Andy Spear and Delia Palmisano will be joining Gaelan and Barbara.
Each of these professional photojournalists are volunteering their time to visit NPPAOU and help us grow, so be sure to attend this Tuesday. Click on each name mentioned above to explore each guests’ website and learn more about them.
As secretary and treasurer of ONPA, and as proud VisCom alumni, Gaelan and Barbara hope to reconnect ONPA’s resources and network of professional photojournalists with student photojournalists — starting with all of us at NPPAOU! Pizza will be included, as well.
Even if you don’t want a portfolio review, please join us to meet the visiting photojournalists and learn more about ONPA. They are all visiting with the purpose of helping us, so please attend and bring questions about anything :)
Along with next week’s meeting, here are a few great opportunities to be aware of:
The 2022 Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar will be held in-person, from November 11-12th. The seminar is in its 50th year, as the longest continuously running photojournalism conference in the U.S. A few of us on the exec board are planning on attending, and we’d love for as many people as possible to join — we could all drive down together as a club!
Apply to be a volunteer here, which includes free Seminar tuition, a free shared hotel room and at least one meal a day.
Submit your work and apply for the $1,000 Dave Martin Student Grant here.
Submit your work and apply for the Student Contest with a $25 fee here.
The National Press Club Journalism Institute has opened a scholarship valued at $10,000, and is offering a Q&A session on how to land an internship.
The new Lewis Scholarship provides free housing and a monthly stipend to support student journalists of color who plan to intern at news media outlets in Washington, D.C., beginning in spring 2023. Spring 2023 applications are now open and are due Oct. 20. The Lewis Scholarship will be awarded to one undergraduate student journalist of color each fall, spring, and summer semester. Find the criteria and information about all of the scholarships here.
They are also inviting student journalists to join for a free virtual question-and-answer session with internship coordinators based in Washington, including C-SPAN, the Dow Jones News Fund, and NPR. Participants will learn what makes an internship applicant stand out and other tips to land an internship. This virtual program will take place at 2 p.m. ET on Sept. 23 (you can register here).
The Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence is hosting a free training for journalists about Trauma-Informed Interviewing & Reporting on Sexual Violence on October 24, 2022 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
We can’t wait to see everyone on Tuesday! If you have any questions, please feel to reach out to us.
